what is hemp

What is Hemp and how sustainable it is?

Let us tell you a little bit more about the hemp, which is the base of our home textiles. What is the difference between marijuana and hemp? How it is grown and harvested? And where it can be used?

Hemp (also called industrial hemp), is a plant of the botanical class of Cannabis sativa and is cultivated for its fiber or its edible seeds. It can be used to make a wide range of products, including paper, rope, textiles, clothing, biodegradable plastics, paint, insulation, biofuel, food, and animal feed.  Along with bamboo, hemp is among the fastest-growing plants on the Earth. “But why is it not used widely?”- you may ask.

Hemp vs. Marijuana: What’s the Difference?

One of the reasons why hemp was not popular in the past is simple – it has got a bad reputation because of its sister – marijuana. Of course here are many discussions around these two names. Some people think that hemp and marijuana are two different plants. In fact, they’re just two different names for cannabis.

But although from a botanic point of view “hemp” and “marijuana” are not that different,  they are being treated differently from a legal perspective.

Legally, the key difference between these two is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content, which is primarily responsible for the “high” associated with cannabis.

The term “hemp” is used to mean cannabis that contains 0.3 percent or less THC content by dry weight. Supposedly, because the THC level in hemp is so low, it’s unlikely to get you high. And so, hemp (or as it is also called technical hemp) falls under different regulations and is allowed to be cultivated.

Is hemp organic?

If it is real hemp, it will be organic by definition or by nature.

  • It has a natural resistance to most insects and microbes, so there is no need to use pesticides.
  • The stalks can reach 2-4 meters high and grow so close to each other, that other weeds cannot thrive. And so – there is no need for herbicides, either.
  • Furthermore, hemp requires much less water than cotton, which is widely used in textile production.
  • It grows fast and in some regions can be harvested up to three times per year.
  • In addition, hemp is easily grown in most regions of the world including Ukraine where we are sourcing our hemp textiles.
