In our previous blog post we were talking about the hemp fabric, it’s advantages and benefits. Today we want to talk about seasonal specifics and care instructions. 

Hemp textiles for all seasons 

Hemp blankets can be used at any season, thanks to hemp’s porous nature and therefore superior absorbency. This means that garments made of hemp are very breathable and quick drying.

Hemp can absorb up to 20% of its own weight while still feeling dry to the touch (vs. polyester, which can absorb a maximum of 6%). This is important in the case of any fabric that is in contact with human skin, such as sheets and covers.

It feels cooler in summer yet during cool weather, air that is trapped in the fibers is warmed by the body, making it naturally warm. Check demi-season or winter hemp blankets in our shop and learn more about available sizes. 

How to take care of hemp fabric

Hemp is generally a very durable and long-lasting fabric, but here are a few tips on how to make it serve you even longer:

Washing 

Like with most natural fabrics, try to be as gentle as possible when washing hemp. Use the gentle wash cycle (wool/silk) or hand wash. Using eco-friendly soap or liquid saponins will also help to protect the fabric. The best is to wash in lukewarm water, and definitely always avoid hot water. 

One more tip: oxygen bleaches (hydrogen peroxide) work much better than chlorine bleaches. 

Drying

Considering that hemp is a really quick-drying fabric, you can line dry your hemp items outdoors. You can use a dryer if required but at the lowest temperatures. 

Ironing 

If ironing is required –  it works best when the hemp fabric is still damp. Use medium heat and start on the wrong side (or the inside of the garment) first before flipping it over to the outside. After ironing, just hang to dry fully in the open air.
